Adina Apartment Hotel Sydney Surry Hills

Disappointing Stay – Wouldn’t Return or Recommend
I stayed at Adina Surry Hills over the weekend and sadly, my experience was quite disappointing. There were a couple of positives - the location is excellent, the room was spacious, and it was easy enough to find my way around the building. Unfortunately, the negatives far outweighed any positives.
Cleanliness was a major issue. The shower/bath had visible residue from the previous guest, the bed headboard had greasy hand and fingerprints all over it, kitchen utensils were dirty, and there were random hairs in the kitchen area and other parts of the room. The windows were also dirty, which made the space feel even less clean.
Noise was another issue - the air conditioning unit ran loudly all night and made it hard to sleep.
Service was also lacking. While the woman who checked me in was polite, the man on the front desk Saturday (who also handled my check-out) was rude and dismissive. I had three bags with me for both check-in and check-out, and no one offered a trolley or any help at any point.
Room service is provided by the restaurant downstairs, which I also tried - and I wouldn’t recommend it. The food was bland and cold when it arrived, and it was delivered in a paper bag like a takeaway order, which felt really impersonal and underwhelming for a hotel stay.
All in all, I wouldn’t return or recommend this hotel based on the poor hygiene standards, lack of customer service. With some proper attention to cleanliness and hospitality training, this could be a much better experience - but for now, I’d suggest looking elsewhere.

If you thought the Australian housing crisis would not be affecting local tourist hotels, then boy do I have news for you. The location is the only saving grace of this hotel.

I booked a two queen bedroom apartment and it was the most unclean and uncomfortable hotel stays I've ever had. Every night I had to stay there was just gross in every sense of the word. Grossly unclean, outdated, and overpriced.

Firstly there were no Queen beds in either room, just two single mattresses pushed together and made up to look like queen beds. This was very uncomfortable (as you can imagine) as you would fall in between the mattresses each night and wake up crooked and sore. The bedroom balcony doors were so loud and squeaky, we might have alerted every living soul in a 3km radius that we went outside. And in one of the rooms, there were fingerprints of dried blood on the curtains. STUNNING.

There was also paint chipped off of every surface in the room. The walls, the doors, the skirting boards... the paint was even swollen and peeling from underneath the heat pump in the lounge area. Bonus, there was a TV in each bedroom and the lounge, however there was only one remote for all three TVs, and I hope you all only like free to air TV news channels, because that's all we got. The kitchen was simple, but the fridge was set to 50 degrees below zero, instantly freezing any items put in there, and the tea and coffee station had not been touched or updated for what looked like a number of years.

The bathrooms were, for a lack of another word, horrible. The extraction fans were covered in dust and didn't work in either bathroom. Plus only one person could shower at a time despite there being two showers, because if both were on at the same time, the first one ran cold. Upon arrival the basins were grimy and uncleaned, the shelves underneath the sink were mouldy from old water leaks, and the showers had mould all throughout the grouting. In one of the bathrooms there was even a hair dryer that was a combination of dusty, rusty and mouldy - see photos.

Even the room service was terrible, as we tried to order food from the downstairs restaurant but the call got diverted to the reception area, who were then rude and unhelpful. They advised us to ring the restaurant direct as they didn't do food, so we googled the restaurant number, and rang it again. It rang for 10-20 seconds then got diverted and reception picked up again, and was annoyed with us for bothering them.

The cleaning service was barely a cleaning service. When Housekeeping showed up each day, they would quickly vacuum, tidy the two single beds into an illusion of a queen bed (but also not change the sheets) and fold the toilet paper end into a triangle, wet stamp it, and leave. That was the FULL extent of their work. They did NOT empty the rubbish bins each day, or wipe counters and surfaces and showers (so God knows when the last actual deep clean of that apartment happened), and had we not respected the hotel request to reuse our towels, I'm in serious doubt as to whether or not they would have been replaced as well.

The room was also so cold and loud. There was no double glazing of the windows (which were not properly sealed since, I guess,  the 90's - seals were old, and dried out with stale mould and grime) so any street noise came directly into the room along with any strong breeze. On the plus side the heat pumps worked, but they too were dusty and so we just had to roll the dice on do we freeze or breathe dust all night.

Small mercies for the things that did go right:
- It was a room.
- The hotel was relatively close to CBD and restaurants.
- It had passable free wifi.

Overall, I would not recommend anyone stay at this hotel until it has a full renovation and replacement of cleaning and front of house staff. Book at your own risk - you have been warned.

If you’re looking for a family friendly stay look elsewhere. Staff Consistently confiscating room cards left in the room, concierge who can’t inform you what the annual street festival 50 meters  away is. Stayed for 4 nights and would not recommend to friends and family if service and hospitality is important. Great location, so if you’re in your own maybe not an issue, but not a venue I will be taking the family back to.

Exceptionally clean 🥳 truly one of the cleanest hotels I’ve stayed at recently. If cleanliness is important to you, you’ll be very impressed. The rooms are large, featuring kitchens and in-room washing and drying facilities, making it a perfect choice for longer stays or those who appreciate self-sufficiency.

If you opt for a room overlooking the pool, you’ll enjoy the lovely sight of planes arriving and departing. There’s also a warm spa downstairs and baths within the apartments – a wonderful point of difference you don’t often find these days. The balconies are super spacious (semi-private) and add to the relaxed, open feel of the property.

If you're looking for self-contained, serviced apartments, look no further.

A few things to note: the area is quite hilly, so having a car is a good idea. However, parking does come at a cost of around $50 per night. Surry Hills is known for its food scene, but as a Melbournian, I found the local eateries to be of fairly low quality, and it was surprisingly difficult to find a good morning coffee or nice café nearby. No one else had this issue. It must be a VIC thing.

Overall, Adina Surry Hills is an excellent choice for those seeking a clean, spacious, and well-equipped apartment hotel – just be prepared when it comes to dining options and transport.

Giving a 1 star review due to a 6.30am pool opening time. Currently, staying here is a Saturday morning. My kids get woken by people making noise in the pool. , I called reception to ask them pool opening time and the man on reception told me 6.30am to 9pm. So if you would like to sleep past 6.30 am dont stay here.  The cleaner also needs to clean the vents they are full of dust, and having a child with severe dust allergy, it isn't nice. Mould in shower, and our matress  had a disgusting stain on it, which made me feel yuck noticing it in the morning.
